Course information

General information

Prerequisite subject: Biology I
Credits: 2+1
Attendance: 75% of the lessons and practices
Exam: written test in the exam period.

Biology II
covering Basic Human Genetics has theoretical (GYGENBILE2A - lecture) and laboratory (GYGENBILG2A - practice) parts too. According to the Academic and Examination Rules (17§ 7-8.) the students must visit at least 75% of the practices. Attendance on the practices will be checked weekly. More than three absences from the practices of ANY REASON invalidate the semester, no signature is given and to sit for the exam is not allowed. There are no extra lectures and practices. On the practices a notebook for notes and drawings, and colored pencils are needed.

Remember the exact time of lectures and practices. Being late (10 or more minutes) from practice is considered as an absence.

In this semester you have two midterms: in the 5th (Moodle test) and 13th week (Moodle test) practice time. On midterms questions will be from practice and lecture. Absence from the midterm is considered as absence from the practice. At the end of the semester your performance will be evaluated by a practical grade. Requirements of practice signature and grade are: not more than three absences from the practices and the average of midterm grades has to be minimum 2.0. Requirement of lecture signature is: practice grade and not more than three absences from the practice. In the case of midterm failure you will have a chance for retake during the semester, and if it is needed a very last chance at the beginning of examination period before the final exam. There is no chance to improve midterm grades. You may have written tests, too.

If you have got lecture signature, in the examination period you will have final exam that will be a Moodle test (multiple choice, essay, drawing etc. similar to midterms) covering practice and lecture parts of both Biology I and Biology II. To pass the exam you have to reach 50% of scores both in Biology I and II questions.

Online registration for the exam through Neptun system will be from the second part of April. Students have three exam chances. In the examination period there are voluntary consultations.

There will be more information on the homepage of the Department (http://gsi.semmelweis.hu, the user name and password is on course datasheet of the Neptun): eg. lecture and practice presentations, detailed topic list for midterms and final exam.

Literature:

  • Genetics and genomics (e-book) - http://gsi.semmelweis.hu/ (The user name and password is on course datasheet of the Neptun)
  • Some chapters of Alberts et al.: Essential Cell Biology. (third or fourth edition) Garland Publ. Inc. are also useful.

Exam

Dear Students,

Please, find below more information about Biology II Exam.

According to the instructions of the Rector-chancellor Order No. E/21/2020. (XI.26.) issued on May 8 2021, all exams at Semmelweis University will take place in person.
The exam period is between May 25, 2021 – July 9, 2021. According to the instructions of the Rector-chancellor Order No. E/21/2020. (XI.26.) §10/A for students, who have been certified to perform voluntary work (for at least 2 weeks) at the organizational units of the University because of the epidemiological situation, the examination period of the spring semester of the academic year 2020/2021 is extended by two weeks.

The Biology II. exam is organized every Monday and Thursdays in the exam period. The place of the exam is NET Building (the exact room will be given in the Neptun one day before the exam).
The semester is finished by a final exam that will be a Moodle test (multiple choice, essay question , TEM and LM photos, family tree, karyogram, evaluation of molecular genetic studies etc.) similar to midterms covering practice and lecture parts of both Biology I and Biology II. For passing (Grade 2-5), you have to reach more than 50 % of the exam scores and you have to reach 50% of scores both in Biology I and II questions. The exam questions are based on the labeled chapters of Essential Cell Biology and the e-book, lecture and practice presentations and handouts. Please, see “Exam” tab on our webpage in the examination period, for more information about the exams.

Registration for the exam dates (or modifying the registration) can be arranged exclusively online by the students’ registration system (NEPTUN). If you want to change your exam day, first you have to cancel your earlier sign up. Since we have to book the exam rooms and Moodle virtual rooms in advance.

For taking the exam, students have to prove their identity by an official formal personal document with a photo (i.e. passport, student card). Students have to show up the medical certificates of being vaccinated against SARS-CoV2, or medical certificates of have been infected within 3 months or a fresh (within one day) negative antigen test result in order to be eligible to attend the exam.

The exam will be in person attendance, 45 min. long Moodle exam for maximum 60 scores. There will be the same type of questions as in the midterms (simple choice, pedigree, karyogram, evaluation of molecular genetic studies, table fill-in, make-order-type questions, matching, drawing type questions, essay questions, etc.).

The topics are based on the lectures and the practical and recommended book as well, so listening to the latter ones greatly helps students to successfully prepare for the exam. At the exam, it is not sufficient to repeat memorized topics from the textbook and presentations, but you have to be able to synthesize and integrate your knowledge from different parts. For more details see Exam topic list.

The exam test will be available in Moodle under the topic Exam at Biology II. EPh I course:
https://itc.semmelweis.hu/moodle/course/view.php?id=5425#section-1

The exam test will be visible just before the exam starts and only during it is available.

Your mark will be calculated as follows:

To pass the exam you have to reach 50% of scores (minimum 14 scores) both in Biology I and II questions.
The result of the exam will be in the Neptun within 48 hours after the exam.

If you miss an exam, the retake exam can be taken upon payment of a retake fee. If you miss the exam for a valid reason you must request deferred standing. To request deferred standing you must submit a supporting documentation to the Students Administration Office of the Department (not to the Secretary) (NET 623) within 3 business days of the missed exam. Doctor’s notes are NOT sufficient for missed exams; you MUST have your doctor fill out the Attending Physician’s Statement (please make sure you are using the current version of the Attending Physician’s statement form – no other versions will be accepted). Exam missed without certification means the loss of one exam possibility.

Consultation in the exam period:
In the exam period the Department keeps official 45 min consultations, once per week. The exact dates will be published on the website prior to the exam period.
