General information

Prerequisite subject: -
Credits: 3
Attendance: 75% of the practicals

Exam: Moodle test in the exam period

Cell Science is a one-semester subject for students of Dentistry. Claims for exemptions are only considered if handed or emailed to Dr. Orsolya Lang (course coordinator) not later than the 8th of September.

Cell Science has theoretical (lecture) and laboratory (practice) parts.

Lectures are given by the Department of Genetics, Cell- and Immunobiology (DGCI) in Brown Lecture Hall (NET Building, Nagyvárad tér 4 Budapest). For a detailed schedule please visit the Topic list on the homepage or in Moodle.

Practices are weekly given by DGCI in Lab 13- 16 (NET Building).

Practices are obligatory. More than three absences of ANY REASON during a semester invalidate the semester. A notebook for notes and drawings and colored pencils are needed in practice.

Remember the exact time of lectures and practices, don't be late for them. Being late from practice may be considered an absence.

All the belongings in the Labs (Practice Rooms) should be handled with care. Any disappearance or harm in them should be paid for by the groups working in the same room.

In the first semester, you have two Midterms (Moodle tests): on the week 6th and 12th. The exact time will be announced later. Both practice and theory knowledge will be tested. At the end of the semester, your performance will be evaluated according to the total scores. Therefore, those students, who achieve 75% of the midterm scores, get one better grade on the exam (e.g. if you achieve a grade of 2 on the written exam, you will get 3 as a final grade in the NEPTUN). This better mark is only credited to those who have more than 50 % of the exam scores.

No opportunity to improve the midterm results.

During the examination period, you have to take the final exam. You are allowed to take the exam if you have got the signature of the subject. Requirement of signature: not more than 3 absences from the practices that are verified by the practice teacher.

The competition (written) will be on the 13th week, and every student who achieves 75% of the midterm scores (calculated from the two midterms) is invited.

Examination info

The semester closing exam is a Moodle test (multiple choice, essays, figures, etc. covering both practical and theoretical parts of the subject). For passing (Grade 2-5) you have to reach more than 50 % of the exam scores.

Online registration for the exam is in the second part of November when the exam days will be published. Signing up and modification of the exam days can be arranged exclusively online by the students’ registration system (NEPTUN). If you want to change your exam day, first you have to cancel your earlier signup. Please consider the registration deadlines for the exams. The time, the place, and the number of students may change after your registration, so check these parameters before the exam.

Students have three chances to take the exam. The failed exam can be repeated after 1 day with a new registration. During the examination period, there are voluntary consultations (the exact time and location will be given in the consultation tab).

On the homepage of the DGCI (http://gsi.semmelweis.hu/more information can be found: eg. slides of lectures, practices, summary of topics not found in the book, description of cytological methods, detailed topic list for midterms and exam.

Exam

Dear Students,

In the 2023/4 Academic year - 1st semester of Semmelweis University (hereafter SU) the Cell Science exam (Dept. Genetics, Cell- & Immunobiology – hereafter DGCI) will be an in-person Moodle test organized in the NET Building. The exam period starts 11th of December and the exam dates are given in the Neptun system.

Examination info:

The semester is finished with a Moodle exam with a short essay and multiple/simple choice questions. The exam grade will be calculated from the exam score. For passing (Grades 2-5) you have to reach more than 50 % of the exam scores (minimum 30). If you collect the minimum 30 scores, the exam grade will be calculated from the sum of exam scores (maximum 60).

Those students, who achieve 80% of the midterm scores, get one better grade on the exam (e.g. if you achieve a grade of 2 on the written exam, you will get 3 as a final grade in the NEPTUN). This better mark is only credited to those who have more than 50 % of the exam scores.

The topics are based on the textbook and the lectures, so attending them greatly helps the successful preparation for the exam. In the exam, it is not enough to reproduce the topics of the textbook and presentations, you have to be able to synthesize and integrate the knowledge from different parts.

During the exam period, we offer one hour of free and optional Zoom consultation on every week. The times and the Zoom link of the consultations will be published on our homepage (see Consultation tab).

Useful hints

Although the exact time and location of the exam is given in the Neptun, in the case of technical issues it may vary. Therefore please check your email or the NEPTUN in the morning on the day of the exam.

Please arrive 15 mins before the start of the exam. To be accepted for the exam You must have a student ID card or Passport. To start the exam you need to know your Seka ID and your password. The duration of the Moodle test will be 55 mins.

Do not forget, that not only the texts of the textbook, but the figures, and drawing are also part of the subject. You have to be able to recognize TEM figures of cell organelles or schemes of different cellular processes or light/ confocal microscopic preparations. While preparing yourself for the exams, it is not enough to read the textbook, always make notes, draw schemes, and flow charts.

Students have three chances to take the exam. The failed exam can be repeated after 1 day with a new registration.

CV course in the next semester:

For those students who can not pass the Cell Science exam in the winter exam period, the Cell Science CV course without lectures and practices will be announced in the 2nd semester. Those students who have already the signature for Cell Science, are allowed to take Cell Science exam after the second semester of 2023/24 (with the number of possibilities that remained in the first semester of 2023/24). Students have to register in the Neptun system for Cell Science (EM student AOKOGEN666_1A and ED student FOKOGEN225_1A) labeled by CV (only exam) announced in the second semester of 2023/24.

Plan your examination period carefully. Do not postpone your exams to the end of the period. Leave the last week of the exam period free for accidental retakes, but we hope these weeks will rather serve for your recreation.

We wish you successful preparation!

Kind regards,

Orsolya Lang MD PhD

course coordinator
