Research areas:

Acute graft versus host disease (aGVHD) developed upon aHSCT is understood as a rather complex disease driven by, among others, the appearance of CD8+T cells homing to and damaging various target organs of the recipient, most frequently the skin and the gastrointestinal tract. Studying aGvHD provides a unique opportunity to gain insight into the induction and regulation of T cell organotropism in a single, clinically also relevant experimental system. The main question raised by in our project is whether it is possible to define novel biomarkers of CD8+ T cells, homing to distinct organs and prognostic markers of acute GVHD as such, and its cutaneous and gastrointestinal forms in particular, by applying such an integrative research approach, and analyzing multiple, functionally linked insults affecting the host.
Ongoing projects are, as follows: parallel, follow-up analysis of the host’s microbiome by metagenome-sequencing, peripheral blood proteins by mass spectrometry and the transcriptome of activated, skin and gut-homing CD8+ T cells by gene expression profiling in aHSCT patients before the onset aGVHD, and an evaluation of the prognostic value of individual biomarkers or any cascade of events affected by disease progression.
