General information

Subject code: FOKGEN037_1A
Prerequisite subject: Medical Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology III.
Credits: 3

The Department of Genetics, Cell- and Immunobiology offers Immunology course for 3rd year students in the first semester. This course provides basic knowledge on the construction and activity of the immune system. The lecturer will sign the lecture (index) books during the exam. According to the Academic and Examination Rules (17§ 7-8.) the students must visit at least 75% of the lessons (both the lectures and seminars). This is the requirement for the validity of the semester. The absences are registered on every week, and more than three absences will invalidate the semester.

During the semester there will be a midterm exam. Points of the midterm will be the part (40%) of the final exam [except the second (or third) retake exam and improving a successful exam]. Although the midterm exam is not a requirement for the validity of the semester, if you miss the exam, 0 (zero) point will be added to your exam scores (and this is very unfavorable for your exam mark), and the missing will increase your number of absences. That is why a replacement midterm will be organized for those students, who miss the midterm because an acute illness, but they have to show up the medical record to the practical teacher (or course coordinator) in one week. After knowing how many students have to take the replacement midterm, we announce its date and place via a Neptun message.  There is no opportunity to improve the midterm result.

Exam info

The semester is finished by a written exam with single choice and essay questions. On the first and second exam the grade will be calculated from the sum of midterm scores and exam scores (40 midterm points + 60 exam points + 10 term-points = 110 points). For passing (Grade 2-5) you have to reach more than 50 % of both the exam scores and total scores. (On the third and forth exam you have to reach more than 50 % of the exam scores.)

The retake exam can be done not sooner than on the 3rd day after the exam. The second and third retake exam – on other words the third and fourth exam – mark is based merely on the exam scores; the midterm points are not counted. The topics are based on the textbooks and the lectures, so attending them greatly helps the successful preparation for the exam. In the examitis not enough to reproduce the topics of the textbook and presentations, butyou have to be able to synthesize the knowledge from different parts.

The exam days will be published one month before the beginning of the examination period. Signing up and modification of the exam days can be arranged exclusively online by the students’ registration system (NEPTUN). If you want to change your exam day, first you have to cancel your earlier sign up. Please, consider the registration deadlines (48 hrs before the beginning of the exam) for the exams. The exam rooms we should be engaged for months in advance, so later we cannot increase the number of examinees. We have to call you attention if you postpone you exam into the end of the exam period you can not register into some of the subjects (having prerequisite the Immunology) of the next semester in time.

You cannot take the exam without lecture (index) book! If you missed an examination you may provide official document in three working days, otherwise “failed to attend” will be registered into your index book and you have to pay a missed exam fee.  The second (and third) retake can be taken after the paying of a retake fee. In this case the students have to show up the receipt before the exam.

During the semester a two-round competition will be organized. The first round is the midterm exam, and based of the result the department will invite students onto the second round (about on the 13. week). The best students may get and an offered grade 4 or 5.

Useful hints

Do not forget that not only the texts of the textbook, but the figures, drawings are also part of the subject. When preparing for the exams, it is not enough to read the textbook, always make notes, draw schemes and flow charts.

Plan your examination period carefully.

Attendance of a minimum of 75% of both the lectures and the seminars is necessary for the end-term signature.

Exam: written test in the exam period.
