Course information

Prerequisite subject: Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology III, Medical and Dental Physiology II.
Credits: 2
Attendance: 75% of the lessons
Exam: written test in the exam period.

The Department of Genetics, Cell- and Immunobiology offers Genetics and Genomics course for 3rd year ED students in the second semester. Students who have passed Medical Biology II do not have to register for this course. (No exemption request is needed).

In the case of having Genetics credits from other university, claim for exemption has to be handed to Dr. Ágnes F. Semsei (tutor) not later than 18th of February.

Genetics and Genomics course provides basic knowledge on general and human genetics and genomics. The course has lecture and practice (laboratory) parts. According to the Academic and Examination Rules (17§ 7-8.), students must visit at least 75% of lectures. This is the requirement for the validity of the semester. More than three absences from the practices and more than three absences from the lectures invalidate the semester, no signature is given. There are no extra practices. In the case of an acute illness, students may attend other practices with the permission of the tutor. The attendance of students occasionally (randomly) will be checked on the lectures.

Midterm exam (written) will be on the 11th week (lecture time). Result of the midterm exam influences the final grade (see below). Spare midterm is organized for those students who miss the midterm because of an acute illness, but they have to show up the medical record to the tutor in one week. There is no opportunity to improve the midterm scores.

During the semester extra scores can be collected (maximum 10) on the lectures and practices. Lecture extra scores (maximum 5) can be collected if you answer correctly the short questions at the end of the lecture (written). Practice extra scores (maximum 5) can be collected on the practices if you solve tasks given by your practice teacher. The extra scores influence the final grade (see below).

Examination info

The semester is finished by a written exam (multiple choice and essay questions, family tree, kariogram, result of molecular genetic studies etc.) The exam grade will be calculated from the sum of midterm scores (maximum 30), extra scores (maximum 10) and exam scores (maximum 60). For passing (Grade 2-5) you have to reach more than 50 % of both the exam scores and total scores. In the case of failure (Grade 1), the retake can be done not sooner than on the 3rd day after the exam. The midterm and exam questions are based on the e-book, lecture and practice presentations and handouts.

In the third exam extra and midterm scores are not counted.

The exam days will be published one month before the beginning of the examination period. Signing up and modification of the exam days can be arranged exclusively online in the students’ registration system (NEPTUN). If you want to change your exam day, first you have to cancel your earlier sign up. Please, consider the registration deadlines (two workdays) for the exams. The time, the place and number of students may change after your registration, so check these parameters before the exam.

Competition

Genetics competition

Dear Students,

Congratulations to your points and grades at the competition!

Those who receive grade 4 at the Genetics and genomics competition:
please, register to a virtual exam on 2018.05.20. from 7:00.
You will see your results here and also at our webpage. Please, check your results at Neptune at the beginning of the exam period.

The students who received grade 4 offers should notify me if they do not accept the grade in the last week of the semester. I suggest you accept it and, if you have any capacity later, you can sign up for a re-examination.
